Next Stage
Who We Are Founded in 2006 by Mark Jared Zufelt, Next Stage, a 2008-2009 Hugo theater-in-residence, is Seattle's new, socially conscious theatre company. Zufelt is joined by a staff of seven, including Associate Artistic Director, Amy Boyce Holtcamp. Zufelt and Holtcamp have been lauded for their work on new plays in recent years, garnering multiple local awards (2005 and 2006 Footlight citations) while working nationally (New York, Washington DC, Atlanta) and internationally (Edinburgh, Manila, Dubai) as directors and playwrights.
Mission and Vision Next Stage inspires audiences to take action by producing vital, progressive live theatre and engaging with neighborhood partners to question and honor the issues facing our community. As part of our commitment to our community, Next Stage is commissioning and producing new plays about themes of social, political and cultural relevance. Next Stage will also ensure that its audiences have access to the work, via the FIRST WEEK FREE initiative, in which the opening week of every production is free to the public on a first come, first served basis. Next Stage is also excited to announce that we are partnering with other non-theatrical organizations to provide multi-layered experiences (lectures, rallies, voter registration drives, et cetera) for our patrons both after the performances and on our website (www.nextstage.org).
Next Stage's 2008 Season Demonology by Kelly Stuart directed by Mark Jared Zufelt March 28 – April 20, 2008
Putting the 'temp' in temptress…
Stuart's hilarious satire of the male dominated workplace is set in a baby formula company, where men determine even the feeding and care of infants. But when Gina, a mother who breast-feeds, joins the staff, things begin to change: the company falls under political sabotage, orders are rerouted, and the building is shut down. But who's really to blame? The New York Times calls Demonology, “a clever examination of sexual tension in the workplace, a play that giddily lifts the veil of office decorum to expose the primal drives that rage beneath the polished surfaces.”
The Nexus Project: A 10-Minute Play Festival August 16 – September 7, 2008 Thursdays-Sundays at 7:30 p.m. Additional Performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 9:30 p.m. Inspired by and benefiting local charities

Island of Misfits by Amy Boyce Holtcamp directed by Mark Jared Zufelt November 28 – December 21, 2008
He didn't want to play their reindeer games…
Three oddball puppeteers - Freddie Douglas, Snowflake Jones and Herbie Pickle - flee the set of the stop-motion Christmas special they are working on to take their own voyage North. Only they aren't heading for Santa's Village, they are heading to Canada and unless they get there by Christmas Eve, Freddie's heading for boot camp. A wild, Yuletide road trip through the turbulent sixties with puppets, police and peril that asks the question: who's pulling your strings?
