Write-O-Rama Raises More Than 10K!On June 6, more than 75 writers--from young poets to seasoned novelists--descended upon Hugo House for Write-O-Rama, raising more than $10,000 to support our programs while writing reams of new nonsense poems, angry letters and smack down dialogue. A special thanks to top fund-raisers Elizabeth Stephan, Jessica Stone and Meredith Sedlachek and all the writers and teachers who helped Write-O-Rama beat its fund-raising goal. Pictures of all the writing and hilarity can be found on our Facebook page; if you look closely, you can see sparks coming from the ferociously quick moving pens. Mark your calendars—the next Write-O-Rama is December 5.
Get a Clue: Plotting, Selling and Promoting the Mystery Novel July 21, 7 p.m.Richard Hugo House presents Get a Clue: Plotting, Selling and Promoting the Mystery Novel on Tuesday, July 21, 7 p.m. in the Cabaret.
Panelists include award-winning mystery authors Curt Colbert, Julie Kramer and Robert Lopresti, who will discuss the ins and outs of writing the mystery novel, how to sell the novel for publication and what to do after it's sold, with a particular focus on how the author can assist with marketing and promotion. Moderated by author Bharti Kirchner. Books will be for sale, including the recently published "Seattle Noir" anthology. Admission to the panel is free.
Avoid the Sun Burn; Sign Up for a Summer Writing Class TodaySummer in Seattle--a time when we writers step away from the pad and pen, lather up the suntan lotion and dig out the beach chairs and flip flops. But, at Hugo House, not all the fun happens in the sun--even if there are fruity drinks with little pink umbrellas.
This summer, our class offerings run the gamut from the graphic autobiography ("Comics and Autobiography" with David Lasky and Greg Stump) to erotica ("Sex on the Page" with Carla Norton). Combine the two, and you'll have quite a day at the beach.
For the less adventurous among us, you can pump up the word count and learn to tap into your poetic inspiration in Karen Finneyfrock's "Become a Powerful Generator" or focus on the craft elements of poetry in Judith Roche's "Poetry: Art and Craft." Or, kick off your sandals and shake it up with Paul Nelson''s "Keeping Your Hand (Foot, Spleen) in It," where you'll experiment with new approaches to writing poetry that'll blow the sand right out from between your toes.
If poetry isn't your thing, perhaps you'll enjoy a seat in the shade with one of our prose classes. In Anne Liu Kellor's "Writing, Fear and Self-Censorship," shrug off the fears, whether it's failure or jelly fish, that impede your writing life and plunge into writing exercises designed to wash away the inner critic. Or, if it's a good workout you need to fit into that bikini, you can feel the burn in "Writer's Workout" with Vincent Kovar.
If you already have a finished piece of writing or have been working on a book or collection, take the next step with Joni Sensel's "Hooks, Lines and Stinkers," a hands-on workshop on drafting the perfect query letter. If you already have an in, try Alice Acheson's "Publicity for Pennies" and learn how you can assist with marketing your own book or, for the do-it-yourselfers, skip the traditional publishing route and consider your options in "Publishing Choices," another Alice Acheson-led workshop that explores self-publishing and print-on-demand.
At Hugo House this summer, we have everything you could want under the literary sun minus the UV rays. Come on by and let your writing feel the heat.
For more information or to register for these or other classes, please visit our online catalog, or call (206) 322-7030.
